What is SILC-Asia?

SILC-Asia is an organization of professionals in the field of library science who are dedicated to the pursuit of greater cooperation and communication among international schools in the Asian-Pacific Rim region. The goal, as always, is to improve library service.

The mission of SILC-Asia is as follows:

The school libraries of the SILC-Asia cooperative are dedicated to working together to provide an effective forum for the sharing of ideas and resources and to promote the cooperative licensing of electronic and print products to support the goals of our individual schools. This mission is achieved through providing access to our on-line OPAC systems where possible, establishing efficient materials request and delivery systems and through ongoing conversations between members either online or in face-to-face meetings.

The SILC-Asia Executive Board has determined the following cooperative priorities:

  • To cooperatively negotiate with vendors, where possible, for the most cost effective services to our members.
  • To provide inter-library loan services to better meet the needs of our schools' students and faculty
  • To create a forum for idea exchange and collaborate through electronic means and face-to-face meetings.
  • To provide reference support, as needed, for member libraries.
  • To identify and introduce new products, services, and training that impact libraries and, by extension, student learning.
  • To promote information literacy in all our efforts.

Membership in SILC-Asia is open to all K-12 schools which serve the expatriate community and where English is the primary language of instruction. Membership is restricted to Asian countries within the Pacific Rim.

Membership in SILC-Asia does not constitute a legal agreement of any kind. Instead, it implies a professional commitment to the ideals outlined above and a willingness to work toward greater communication and cooperation among member schools.
